Welcome to the Heritage Radio Vault Journal: Find Your Next Classic Radio Listen
Welcome to the Heritage Radio Vault Journal, the reading companion to our classic radio archive. This is a place to discover your next listen, explore different kinds of audio storytelling, and spend a little more time with the programmes that catch your imagination.
If you are new to old-time radio, you do not need to begin with an enormous episode list. Start with the sort of story you already enjoy, choose one programme, and give it your attention.
Choose a story to suit your mood
Detective and crime: start here if you enjoy following clues, weighing up suspects and listening for the detail that changes a case. Pay attention to the narrator: the way an investigator describes a scene can be as revealing as the dialogue.
Mystery and horror: choose these when you want atmosphere and uncertainty. A pause, a door closing or a voice heard at a distance can leave room for your imagination to do the rest.
Comedy: try a lighter listen when you want character, timing and conversation. Some references may feel unfamiliar, so approach older programmes with curiosity about the period as well as the joke.
Westerns, science fiction and adventure: explore these when you want a change of setting. Listen for how sound and dialogue establish a place without showing it on a screen.
Make your first listen a simple one
Choose a single episode rather than a long compilation. Check its description for the programme name, running time and any indication that it continues an earlier story. For an unfamiliar recording, try a short sample first to see whether the speech is comfortable to follow on your headphones or speakers.
Older audio can contain hiss, uneven volume or gaps. Recording quality and personal listening preferences differ, so it is reasonable to try another episode if a particular copy is difficult to follow.

A new chapter for this blog
This blog previously covered personal experiences and business topics. Those earlier posts remain part of its history. From here, the journal's focus is Heritage Radio Vault: classic programmes, listening discoveries and the craft of telling a story through sound.
Whether you are returning to a favourite genre or trying classic radio for the first time, begin with one story. You may discover a voice, a character or a series you want to hear again.
